With support received from Sir Dorabjee Tata Trust, Mumbai, we opened special schools at Chandanpur and Chagharia Pada villages of Tangi Choudwar Block of Cuttack district. The project was planned to combat child labour and take immediate steps for withdrawal and prevention of children participating in the worst forms of labour. First, the community was empowered through social mobilization process by motivating them to provide education to their children instead of sending them to work. Second, through creative pedagogy and joyful learning, effort was made to keep the children interested in the learning process. After withdrawing of children from hazardous and non-hazardous occupations, the organization rehabilitated them in two centers established for this purpose, where they are provided with non-formal education, vocational training, health care service and nutrition, etc. The performance of this project is appreciable and worth replicating. No doubt, these schools are essentially acting as a bridge to various institutions, sincerely trying to withdraw children from work and mainstream them with better educational facilities.
